AICE Media Studies: Genre Research: To The Bone

To The Bone is a movie that fits perfectly into the drama genre. It's about a young woman struggling with her severe anorexia and eating disorders, she's had life threatening experiences and is placed into a group home for those similar to her. Through the people there she learns about making the effort into getting better and the consequences of giving up. When you're close with people who have eating disorders or other illnesses, you try to be sympathetic but you cannot fully grasp their way of thinking and mindset because you don't have that problem. This is a really great movie and helped me appreciate the ones I know who struggle with this and to understand more about it. About the genre, this is not a movie with any action in it. It contains language so it's already not family friendly, and is not any horror-ish. This movie is adult, it doesn't cut corners, it's serious and funny at times, and it always had you worried like a horror movie does, but not scared. That element I enjoyed, the seriousness of the movie as well as the fun little moments sprinkled in it. Now one element I did not like as much is the eeriness that loomed over you as I watched. The movie is about a serious topic and does not provide a classic happy ending as one would prefer. It leaves things open ended and suspended, it doesn't tie all the knots and dot all the i's. I disliked that part but wanted to use the serious tone element in our own project.
