Title Research: Trainspotting
Picking a more recent movie, we decided to use Art of the Titles again to find a newer movie to compare to the old ones we looked at before. This movie was made in 1996 so it'll be closer to movies made today. To analyze the elements in the opening sequence, we chose to answer a few questions below to give us an understanding of the titles.
- What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? Titles displayed are the main characters and the situations they are in. It shows the cast of characters and their names and things that they are doing. Some of things are dark and isn't appropriate but that is the approach of the movie. The end of the opening sequence shows the movie title in a dark screen.
- What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? Images prioritized is one of the characters running away from the cops. Also, them playing soccer is also prioritized. They also prioritized the group in a house doing things and talking to one another.
- What connotations do these images carry? The connotations carried are really negative. The actions they are doing aren't good at all for society, such as smoking and drinking. This brings on a really negative feeling to the opening sequence. This makes the sequence more dramatic for the audience.
- How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset? It establishes the feeling of the genre from the outset by having the person run from the cops. This in itself is pretty dramatic as you shouldn't do that and implies he did something very wrong and is clearly worried and scared.
- What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? Strategies used to ensure the appeal to the audience is dramatic scenes and fun music. This is a dark drama film, along with comedy. The film makers wanted to make sure the audience knows this so they put fun music and fun actions along side of negative things like smoking and drinking. They speaker also talks about really dark and dramatic things as well. This pushes the appeal to the audience who want a dark drama film.
- How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques. Camera angles used in this film include establishing shots to show the various locations the different scenes are in. Others include low angles to show the character running. Close up shots are also used to show the characters face and their emotions. Editing used is simple cutting and zooming in and out on a character. The editing is also fast and slow paced.
This movie is new compared to the other films we researched. It contains similar editing and camera angles to today. The appeal to a darker audience is here which is different from the other films we covered as a group. Overall, this film has great camera angles and editing aspects and appeals well to its audience.
